All You Need to Know About Sheer

Sheer is one of those very commonly used adjectives which is not well covered in English text books. 

Yet, it is used regularly in many English collocations so you need to understand it. However, what does it mean?

SHEER – A USEFUL ADJECTIVE

Sheer is an adjective meaning 'utter', 'absolute' or 'complete' and we use it to show how powerful or great something is.Click To Tweet
  • So, sheer is used for emphasising the amount or degree of something. For example, you can succeed through sheer hard work.
  • Sheer is also used for something that is extremely steep, for example a sheer drop, a sheer cliff face.

  • Sheer may also be used for something very fine, typically material. For example, the sheer silk curtains were very thin and fine.
